“The greatest injustice in our country today is that we can still predict student achievement and outcomes by zip code, income level, and race. I was reminded of this injustice every day as a teacher and now every day as a district leader. This injustice is what keeps me passionate about this work, and until it no longer exists, I cannot imagine another challenge more worthy of addressing.”

Amy Malen currently works for Pittsburgh Public Schools as a project manager in the Office of Strategic Initiatives. In this role, she focuses on the district-wide Pathways to the Promise initiative. The initiative is intended to ensure that all students are academically prepared to move on to college upon graduation from a Pittsburgh Public School. Prior to this role, Malen served as the director of research and assessment for the Oakland Unified School District. In this role, she managed a team of individuals who coordinated state and local testing, data support for district leadership and school sites, and programmatic evaluation and research for the district. Malen first came to Oakland to support the strategic development of a performance management system. Malen started her career in the classroom. She taught chemistry at Eastern Senior High School in Washington, D.C. as a Teach For America corps member and eighth grade math at the McCormack School in Boston. Malen holds an advanced bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Princeton University and a master’s degree in public policy from the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. Malen participated in The Broad Residency in Urban Education Cohort 2008, serving her two-year Residency in Pittsburg Public Schools.
